Two races of vampires walk our world. One, the Moroi, are alive and wield elemental magical. The other, the Strigoi, are undead and evil–feeding on the innocent to survive. Rose Hathaway–a half-vampire with poor impulse control–is training to be a bodyguard for a Moroi princess. Learning to decapitate and stake is hard enough, but Rose’s real danger may lie in an illicit romance with one of her instructors…
Today and as my first Recommendation Friday, I am recommending the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead to you! I just reread these books for the third time and it gets better every time I reread them.
But first, the premise:
Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires – the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.
After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger… and the Strigoi are always close by.
Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…
Now, the reason I love these books so much is simply because of two of the protagonists, Rose and Dimitri. These two make these books so much fun to read, yet it’s also heart-breaking at times. The characters are so well written that you don’t even notice how involved you get until it all comes to an end and you just sit there, craving for more of that amazing and addicting content.
The world is absolutely fantastic. I don’t think any author writing about vampires has ever accomplished to get a story to this kind of level of awesomeness which, in my opinion, is better than Twilight (back off Twilight fanatics). I mean, how in the world did Richelle Mead come up with a storyline this extensive and complex and actually managed to pull that off?
Besides the obvious awesomeness in this book, the way how with every book, the characters and the world developed so much and got even better was amazing and very intriguing. Richelle Mead always added new characters, new twists and turns but she managed to keep it all balanced and in check for the reader to comprehend every aspect.
The writing is fantastic and because it’s told out of Rose’s point of view, it’s witty and fun to read. I could relate a lot to Rose and the other characters which is always a plus for the reading process because one feels more involved when relating to something in the book.
I recommend these to you if you’re in a reading slump because these sure will get you out and on track again. But even if you’re not in a slump and just like fantasy books, this would be perfect for you but don’t get misled by the fact that this is a vampire series because it has very different elements to it.
A must-read for any fantasy lover!
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next Friday!
